BCL Workshop with Rachel Goldammer

The Behavior Checklist (BCL) is a method of assessing dog behavior. Specifically, it is a behavior scoring system developed by Dr. James Serpell from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in collaboration with multiple guide dog organizations, including The Seeing Eye and Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The BCL provides a way to describe aspects of behavior important for guide and service dogs (however, the behaviors measured in this assessment can still be helpful for other working dog roles or even pet/breeder temperament evaluations).

Importantly, the BCL has been validated and demonstrates the capacity to measure behavior consistently, lending itself to analysis. The IWDR has developed some tools that utilise BCL scores to provide analysis on aspects of your breeding program.

Rachel Goldammer is a seasoned consultant with Canine Genetic Specialists, specializing in canine reproduction, whelping, neonatal care, puppy socialization, development, and strategic planning. She collaborates with the International Working Dog Association and the International Working Dog Registry, providing educational resources in these critical areas. Rachel is Behavior Checklist certified and is recognized as a gold-standard teacher. With a deep passion for education and building sustainable, purpose-bred dog colonies, Rachel brings over 20 years of experience in the canine care industry. She holds a degree in Animal Science from Truman State University, emphasizing animal reproduction. Her career began at Nestlé Purina, followed by impactful roles with Dogs Inc, Guide Dogs of America, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and Freedom Service Dogs. Rachel resides in Florida with her husband, two corgis, and two rescue cats. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys crafting, swimming, and traveling.
