SUMMARY:Walk & Talks: Using the BCL to Support Puppies & Raisers
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores how to effectively structure and conduct puppy Walk & Talks using the Behavior Checklist (BCL) as a tool for behavioral observation\, developmental monitoring\, and individualized support. Emphasis is placed on evaluating puppies at approximately 4 and 10 months of age\, recognizing developmental differences\, and distinguishing between age-appropriate behaviors and those that may affect a puppy’s ability to function successfully.\n\nParticipants learn how to combine live behavioral observations with raiser-reported information\, accurately document behaviors using standardized BCL terminology\, and assess factors such as intensity\, recovery\, functionality\, and required support. The presentation also highlights the importance of the puppy–raiser relationship\, effective coaching\, and translating assessment results into actionable training and development plans.\n\nThe key takeaway: Walk & Talks are not pass/fail evaluations but opportunities to understand each puppy’s developmental progress\, support raisers\, promote canine welfare\, and make informed decisions throughout the puppy-raising process. They are based off of natural/environmental observations and not a formalized test battery like the GDBart.\n\nDate and Time: Nov 11 2026\, 06:00 PM Eastern Time\n\nRegister here:\nNon-IWDA members can register via Eventbrite: click here\nIWDA members can register for free from their member page: sign in and click here.
